Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Fan Response

Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
