In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
