NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, was not quick to announce he would live there immediately after his victory in November.

"My choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda voters voted for," Mamdani said in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

However his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria apartment.

With its cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
