Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
