The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with five in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
